Dragon Con 2017: Casper Van Dien and Patrick Muldoon Interview

by Beth

Yeah, I know. It's 31 Days of Halloween time. I've still got these interviews to post though, and the last 2 are people who've been in horror movies (or TV shows) so I'm counting it. This next interview was with Casper Van Dien and Patrick Muldoon from Starship Troopers. They've both done SyFy channel horror movies too, and are even working on a new Werewolf movie together called Alpha Wolf. See, totally fits with the Halloween theme.
Starship Troopers is one of those movies that I can't turn off if it comes on TV. I love the satire, the silliness, the Jake Busey. Okay, maybe that last one doesn't exactly make or break a movie. It does have Neil Patrick Harris, Michael Ironside, and Clancy Brown though. And bug killing. Lots and lots of bug killing. Bill Corbett told me that Casper was very supportive of the RiffTrax Live they did of Starship Troopers. I saw it myself, and it was indeed hilarious. As much as I love it, I am aware that it's kind of goofy sometimes. But, hey that's part of what makes it great. What I wanted to ask is if they believed that the movie did so poorly at the box office because it was too far ahead of it's time or because people didn't get the social satire at the time. Yes it was a box office flop, but it quickly became a cult classic. I had spent the hour before the interview preparing extra questions since I found out late that this was not just going to be Casper Van Dien, but Patrick Muldoon as well. I didn't really know that much about the guy outside of Starship Troopers, and didn't want to be rude by not having anything that I could ask him. I had several thoughtful questions planned out, but it all just kind of fell apart in the actual interview. And no, it absolutely wasn't my fault.

Because I'll be honest. This isn't much of an interview. Casper was about 10 minutes late, and once he got there he and Patrick just started ripping on each other. I'm not complaining though because they were hysterical. I as able to cram one of my long thought out questions in at the end. Once Casper realized we were out of time he asked the media team for just a little longer, and just had us rapid fire questions off at he that he just a quickly answered with a yes or no.

So the audio here is broken up into 2 parts. The first part is when it was only Patrick Muldoon in the room with us. He was surprisingly funny on his own. The second part is the two of them together, and that's when it gets really funny.

Like I said, not much  in the way of an interview, but it was so cool to sit around with the stars of one of my favorite movies ever. I'm still having trouble with embedding the mp3 so if anybody knows anything about that please let me know because it's making me crazy. I've tried 20 different html codes, and none of them seem to work for me. While I keep trying I've put in the downloadable versions since those at least are just links. Argh! (Update - I can get the audio to work on my desktop and laptop so it seems to just be a phone problem. Maybe my phone in particular. Still don't know why). It has become painfully obvious that a computer nerd is not one of the many types of nerd that I am.

And in case you were wondering: yes, Casper Van Dien was every bit as handsome and charming as I hoped he would be. They hung around for a good while after we wrapped up, and took pictures with everyone. Lots of pictures that became increasingly awkward as they groped each other around me. I kind of felt like I was getting in the way there towards the end. Despite the lack of a real interview it was the most enjoyable press conference I did all weekend. Nothing against any of the other stars I talked to, but they were just so damn funny, strange, and yes...dreamy.

Here's both guys together to stream.

Join me next time as I wrap all of my Dragon Con coverage up with the Michael Rooker press conference. Now there's a guy who knows how to be scary. After that I promise I'll get on to being my expected Halloweenie self.

  2. I thought the whole month was 31 days of Halloween. Since when is it a countdown? And I'm way worse at html than I am at Halloweenering.
