31 Days of Halloween – Walker Stalker Con Preview

On November 1-3, 2013, Walker Stalker Con made its debut in Atlanta where it assembled 17 main cast members from “The Walking Dead”, more than any other convention ever before, along with 35 other actors from zombie and horror films. In attendance were Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus and “The Walking Dead” Executive Producer, Greg Nicotero, among many others.

This year the event will be held at the Atlanta Convention Center at AmericasMart this weekend, October 17-19, 2014.

Needless Things will be covering the event and (hopefully) doing interviews, so I thought it would be prudent to write up a preview detailing where we’d be and when. That way you can buy us beers.

Check out the Press Release we posted in September for a full list of guests. Today’s post is about the schedule and the vendors. Check the Walker Stalker site for the full lists of those.

Vendors

Art By Pork/Drop Dead Bizarre – Local artists Human Pork will be on site with his array of masks and horror-themed goodies. Stop by this table to see some of the best craftsmanship around.

Bones Art – Sculptor Andrew Bones will be on hand with a ton of brand-new stuff. I asked him if he could give Needless Things readers a special preview of his projects for Walker Stalker and he sent along pictures of some kickass new pieces:

Cavity Colors – I don’t remember where I know Cavity Colors from, but as soon as I saw the word pairing on the site images of Stephen Gammell-esque art with vibrant, wild colors popped into my head. I can’t wait to see what kinds of shirts and prints they bring.

Hasbro – I have to say – I’m pretty shocked to see this. I can’t imagine why Hasbro is going to be here and I honestly would have thought it was off of their radar. But I am certainly going to be talking to them. I don’t foresee me ending up on any kind of review list or anything, but maybe I can at least get an interview. Or a sticker. Something.

Plastic Empire – I’m fairly certain this is the place with the MASSIVE selection of Funko
Pop! Vinyl figures that was at Heroes Con and Wizard World. If so, the guy there was incredibly nice and knowledgeable. I’ll buy something here just because I like them.

Retro-a-go-go! – This vendor features all kinds of cool products and accessories, many of which feature art by the likes of Mitch O’Connel and Doug P’Gosh. Lots of classic monster inspired stuff.

Randy Bishop – The creator of Hawk of New York. Bishop will be in hand with prints and books and possibly copies of the Hawk of New York soundtrack, which features Needless Things favorites, Radio Cult! Bring Randy a guitar and maybe he’ll play you his version of “Ghost Riders In the Sky”. It’s great! Bring him a Jas Ingram with a saw and he’ll have to do it.

Dorkside Toys – I love these guys! I talked with them at Wizard World and they were just great. Another vendor I’ll buy something from just because I like them. If you can’t make it out to Walker Stalker, check out their online store.

Circus Envy – Atlanta’s own king of weird, this greasepainted freak can always be found wandering around the best horror cons. Stop by and say hello or just enjoy the cotton candy smell he exudes everywhere he goes.

Schedule

There’s a lot more going on this year, and it’s all in one location. I’ll be there Friday and Saturday, so here’s the stuff I’m looking forward to:

Friday 4 PM – Main Panel Room – Michael Rooker – I’d be very interested in seeing Rooker talk for an hour. It seems like this would be best as a career retrospective rather than focusing on Walking Dead, but I’m not sure. I’d really like to hear about Guardians of the Galaxy. And Slither. And Henry. And Mallrats. Okay, pretty much everything the man has done.

Saturday 12 PM – Convention Hall – Jason Momoa – This guy has been really good on talk shows. Between Game of Thrones and all of his other work in the genre world I bet this will be a fascinating hour.

Saturday 1 PM – Main Panel Room – Andrew Lincoln & Norman Reedus – Obviously this is the Main Event of the Con. Either of these guys on their own would be great, but the two of them should be a lot of fun.

Other Items of Note

*The twins that played Rick’s baby will be at the con on Saturday. Because apparently people want to meet babies.

*This year’s non-The Walking Dead guests include – Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley from The Vampire Diaries, those guys from Comic Book Men, Jason Momoa, Arthur Suydam(!), Howard Sherman from Day of the Dead, Roy and RJ from FaceOff, Landon Giminez from Resurrection, people from Z Nation, and Mackenzie Lintz and Grace Cox from Under the Dome.

Tickets for the event start as low as $35 for general admission and can be purchased at

Needless Things V. 31 Days of Halloween

Every October for the last few years Needless Things has provided commentary on SyFy’s – the television channel devoted to science fiction (sort of) – schedule. Not because the channel provides the best Halloween content, but because they provide the most. Aside from some paid programming in the wee hours of the morning (because somebody has to pay for Sharknado 3: Again With This?), SyFy makes an effort to program content that is at least Halloween-ish every hour of the month.

It is for this that we thank them and devote far more effort than we should into dissecting what they have to offer.

Oct 13 11:00 AM 31 Days Of Halloween Movie Dracula 2000

SyFy loves this movie. They show it many times every year. I didn’t particularly care for it the first time I saw it. The only redeeming thing about it was the Vitamin C boob scene (which is absent from the SyFy TV edit). As time has gone on and I’ve ended up catching bits and pieces of this thing I’ve learned to enjoy the fact that Jonny Lee Miller was in a lot of movies previous to his career as Sherlock Holmes and not all of them were good.
Seriously, though – I have mellowed on Dracula 2000 a bit. I just wish somebody would read my screenplay for Dracula 2000 V. Andre 3000.

Oct 13 01:00 PM Syfy Original Movie Children Of The Corn

This is not the original, it’s the SyFy remake. It doesn’t really matter because I don’t like either of them. Or the sequels. Or the original short story. I had my fill of sociopathic, prepubescent hayseeds when I was in school.

Oct 13 09:00 PM 31 Days Of Halloween Movie Wolfman, The

This is probably the Wolfman movie starring Benicio Del Toro, not the one starring Lon Chaney, Jr. That one’s The Wolf Man, anyway, but people don’t always get that right.

The more recent version felt like two movies that had been unceremoniously stuck together – one was a great horror flick about a werewolf, the other was a drama about a romance between two boring people.

What I’m saying is don’t watch this. Watch the original.
