13 Questions With Stephen Platinum

Stephen Platinum is the man we have to thank for Platinum Championship Wrestling.
Of course, I didn't know that the first time I met the guy.

13 Questions With "The Revelation" Shane Marx

The first time I saw “The Revelation” Shane Marx wrestle it blew my mind.
It was the Main Event of the very first Platinum Championship Wrestling show I ever attended. The match was a Four-Way featuring Davey Richards – whose name I recognized, Chip Day – who I knew from Dragon*Con Wrestling, some other dude, and Shane Marx. The first three guys have a certain physique. A look that says “pro wrestler”. They’re smaller and agile-looking. They look fast and hungry.

Empire Wrestling 9/21/2012

It is with a genuinely heavy heart that I tell you this will likely be my last recap of wrestling action from the PCW Arena/Academy Theater in Avondale Estates. It is entirely possible that this will be my second-to-last recap of any PCW action.
I told you guys yesterday about PCW and how I feel about the company. It’s tough to know it may change drastically or not even be around soon. But we’ll jump off that bridge when we get to it. For now, I’ve got one last night of hardcore, ass-kicking action and surprises to talk about, so let’s do it!

Platinum Championship Wrestling is Rad

Before I get too deep into this one I want to make it clear that I don’t know the whole story, I don’t know any of the guys in PCW on anything more than an acquaintance basis, and all of this is written purely as a fan of professional wrestling. I’m not “in” with these guys and gals and I don’t write about PCW out of anything other than a love of the company and what it does.
I didn’t know this until last Friday night, but Stephen Platinum is leaving.
Well, technically Stephen Platinum is already gone. For the past two months or so he has been commuting from Orlando to Atlanta every weekend for Empire/PCW shows. Obviously that’s fucking ridiculous. Nobody could keep that up. But it does change my perspective on what’s been going on with Platinum Championship Wrestling the past few months.

Good Times At Walmart

I had a ridiculous Walmart experience the other day.
Now, let me go ahead and answer all of the smarmy, self-righteous assclowns that are going to say, “Well, that’s what you get for shopping at Walmart. I don’t ever go there.”
Shut the fuck up. You can take your bag of Whole Foods organic potatoes, your Starbucks Grande cup of Foggy Colombian Sunrise, your hemp sandals, and your all-natural granola imported from Zaire; not to mention your Portland microbrew, your ironic mustache, and your iPod Shuffle full of socially responsible music – take all that, turn those sumbithces sideways, and stick them straight up your candy ass.

Movie Review - Resident Evil: Retribution

If you haven’t read one of my movie reviews before, just know that there may or may not be spoilers and what I write here may or may not be a recap or make any actual sense.
(All pictures from the excellent Resident Evil: Retribution movie site, which makes reviewing their movie easy by having pics readily available. Thanks, Sony!)
I saw two movies in the theater yesterday, which is a record for me.
Not an all-time record. I think that would be four. I used to meet up with a buddy of mine from time to time on Fridays and we’d just go and see a bunch of movies. I think we only hit four once, but it happened. Now, with a family and a horrible work schedule that is more like a form of psychological torture than an actual rotation of shifts, I don’t even get to go and see one movie all that often.
But yesterday, sensing I was more broke than King Kong Bundy’s old recliner, the family decided it was a great day for movies and dining out.

Comic Book Update - September 2012

It’s been about three months since my last Comic Book Update and a lot has happened. Not as much as I kind of thought would happen, but some changes have occurred nonetheless.

Toy Review – DC Signature Collection Mirror Master By Mattel

Okay – time for something new.
I’ve always struggled a bit with some of my own categories for toy reviews and was just too lazy to change them. But now I’ve cleaned things up a little bit so they might make a bit more sense or at least be clearer. I have more categories, and each one is more specific so I won’t be trying to figure out when to say what.

Dragon*Con 2012 - Okay, for real - this is the last one.

Day 4 Late Night
It had been my intention that the Puppet Slam would be the grand finale of my Dragon*Con coverage, but I have just enough more to say to warrant another post. Not only are there a few hours on Monday to cover, but there are a few random thoughts and follow-up things I want to put out there.
So now, two weeks after Dragon*Con ended, I’m finally wrapping things up.

Dragon*Con 2012 - The Late Night Puppet Slam

It is finally time. I have been anticipating and dreading this moment. Anticipating because the Puppet Slam is second only to wrestling for the level of Dragon*Con excitement it generates in me. Dreading because I want to be sure and do it justice.

Dragon*Con 2012 - Day 4

I awakened Sunday morning to Rescue John and Mrs. Troublemaker vacating the room. We had no child/pet/house sitter for Sunday night, so the missus had to get back home to take care of business. After they left I went back to sleep. There wasn’t crap going on Sunday morning.
Well, that’s not really true at all. There were actually a few panels I wouldn’t have minded seeing, but again – comfy Hilton bed. Not only that, but comfy Hilton bed that you can actually lay in and watch Dragon*Con TV. Which shows panels.

Dragon*Con 2012 - The Midnight Spookshow with CALABRESE!

Day 3 Night
Yesterday’s post got lengthy. Today’s is going to be much more brief, not to mention aided by LIVE MUSIC VIDEOS.

Dragon*Con 2012 - Day 3

Day 2 Late Night
Welcome back to my annual exhaustive recap of my experiences at Dragon*Con. I’ve already covered the first couple of days as well as DCW, but we’ve still got a couple more days and the Late Night Puppet Slam to go. I’m hoping I can get everything wrapped up by Friday.

Dragon*Con 2012 Recap - Day 2

Go read yesterday’s post if you haven’t.
To sum up, I’ve never gone down on Thursday. I usually go down on Friday morning and follow a very specific game plan:
  • Get badge
  • Possibly attend panel
  • Check into hotel room
  • Go to Artists’ Alley
  • Go to Dealer’s Room
  • Go to Exhibitor Halls
  • Go to the Walk of Fame
  • Start drinking a lot of beer
  • Go to wrestling
This is a good schedule of events and it works for me. I get those first items knocked out during the initial sober hours of Con so I don’t have to worry about them while I’m hung over or drunk or anything else. I call it my Sober Time. I can efficiently browse through all of the rooms that suck up all of my money and then stumble through them the rest of the weekend at my leisure. But the initial inspection is done.
I woke up Friday morning hung over as a motherfucker.

Dragon*Con 2012 Recap - Day 1

For the first time ever I am not depressed after Dragon*Con.
I had a touch of the post-Con blues on Monday, but since then I have felt absolutely revitalized, recharged, and optimistic. 2012 might have brought the best Dragon*Con so far, and 2013 is looking even better. But we’ll get to all that.
For right now, it’s time to take a look back at all of the crazy shit that happened at the very best gathering of dorks and dorkery available in the world. From early Thursday evening until Monday afternoon I immersed myself into a world of fantasy, science fiction, comic books, wrestling, and – most importantly - fans of those things. The only other kind of experience that I can compare a proper visit to Dragon*Con with is a trip to Walt Disney World. Both are utter escapes from the mundane world and both can be life-changing experiences.
Also, they are both expensive as shit.
For the first time ever I got a room for Thursday night, so this year Dragon*Con starts a day earlier…

13 Questions With Dan Carroll – Director of Media Relations for Dragon*Con

Note: This was supposed to go up on Friday. It did not. Blogger does terrible things to me sometimes. But I actually feel like that's for the best because nobody was going to be reading my blog during Dragon*C on proper anyway. I obviously didn't.
So now I'm still in D*C coverage and I've got one last cool post to give you before starting my recaps, which will take about ten more weeks (not really).

That's Dan on the left. No - not the puppet. That's Carl.

Dragon*Con 2012 - Some Art I Got

Pretty much all I spent my money on this year was art. Not a lot of it, but it's just weird that I didn't buy a single toy or other item of dorkery. Not for myself, anyway.
