31 Days of Halloween Day 20: Spooky Toy Review – Universal Monsters Retro Cloth: Mummy By Diamond Select Toys

I think my love of the Mummy as a character comes from Hammer’s Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb being one of the first legit horror movies to scare the shit out of me as a child. Another positive is that I have never seen an Egyptian Mummy movie that I haven’t liked (and yes, I specified “Egyptian” so I could ignore that wretched third Brendan Frasier Mummy movie), something that can’t be said about vampires, werewolves and the reanimated corpses.

I was also heavily into mythologies from around the world when I was a kid, so anything closely associated to the Egyptian gods fascinated me.
First Glance: Another great head on this guy. I think his card art works the best as well.
Sculpt: Imhotep has a very nicely sculpted head. Matching up with most of the rest of this series, it would sit just as well on a more detailed figure. It’s all wrinkly and desiccated and represents the character very well. His hands are equally as detailed and his right hand even sports the signature ruby ring.
The body is what we’re used to. While the others are mostly acceptable (I still would have liked upper arm swivels), this one really would have benefited from rocker ankles. I’m not knocking the figure for not having them, but it would have been neat considering his iconic draggy leg. Otherwise it’s a great, functional buck for almost any character. Which is why it is so popular to this day.
Design: The paint on the head and hands is fantastic. Lots of detail and the colors just look awesomely dusty. The ring is colored well and accurately and really pops, making the figure more exciting to look at.
His bandage suit is cleverly done. DST used a single garment with creases and folds in it to simulate bandages. It looks really good from a distance and really even works up close. I even like the simple little tied-off pieces they used for the effect of the hanging bandages. My only problem here is that you can see Imhotep’s pink skin under the suit. This is a problem for a couple of reasons – 1) It just looks kind of bad, not horrible; and 2) Imhotep should not have pink skin. Not when he was alive and certainly not now.
The solution is a fairly simple one. You can’t change the fabric of the suit because you need to keep costs down and you want it to hold those bandage-resembling wrinkles. You can’t do an undersuit because that would just be excessive. But they could have molded his body from a different color plastic. Ideally it would match his hands and head, but they could have even just done it in an off-white color that matched that bandages. A simple fix that should have been done in the first place. This is nowhere near as grievous an offense as Dracula’s pink skin, but it bothers me a bit.
Accessories: None. But none are necessary.
Packaging: These Universal Monsters come in the same packaging as the Star Trek Retro Cloth figures (. It’s a perforated plastic shell over a cardboard backer. You have to cut the edges of the shell to get the figure open, but the shell is resealable. I would like it more if there were stickers or something holding the shell together and it did not require cutting. Once you cut the edges it leaves them sharp and they will cut you rather easily. I admire the intention with this method, but the execution leaves something to be desired. I kind of overlooked the nice package art in the rest of the reviews. It’s nice.
Overall: The Mummy is so great except for the minor little detail of his see-through garment. And that hardly matters overall. He’s not perfect, but he’s darn close. Definitely a buy.
4 out of 5
You should still be able to find Mr. Imhotep on shelves at Toys R Us. Go buy one.
Scareglow: “Hello Mr. Imhotep. My name is Karak Nul and I’d like to talk to you about an exciting new opportunity in the area of professional villainy!”
Mummy: *uuuuhnn*
Scareglow: “No doubt! But… ah, fuck it.”

31 Days of Halloween vs. 31 Days of Halloween!
11:30 AM – 1:30 PM – The Seamstress – I think SyFy has just given up and I sort of want to as well.
Halloween score – 3
Quality score – 1
1:30 PM – 8:00 PM – Saw movies – How many horror movies have been made in the history of ever? And we have to show the Saw movies four times each in the space of twenty-eight days? Seriously?
Halloween score – 3
Quality score – between 2 and 4
8:00 PM – 10:00 PM – WWE Smackdown – I think I’ve officially weaned myself off of Smackdown. Good for me! I will be watching the Muppets on RAW Monday, though.
Halloween score – Possibly as high as 4, since WWE has done holiday-themed shows in the past
Quality score – 1
10:00 PM – 11:00 PM – Sanctuary – An all-new episode. I think the people on this show bug me. The lady is sort of off-putting in a way I can’t define and the dude looks like an extremely tall 8-year-old with Bert eyebrows.
Halloween score – 3
Quality score – 3
11:00 PM – 12:00 AM – Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files – THE SAME FUCKING ONE AGAIN! AAAARGH!
Halloween score – 3

1:00 AM – 5:00 AM – Pumpkinhead movies – Whoopee! These again! Don’t show The Fly or Texas Chainsaw or anything! We’ll just watch the same three movies over and over again!

10:00 AM – 10:30 AM – Scare Tactics
Halloween score – 4
Quality score – 1
10:30 AM – 12:30 PM – Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave – This and the other ROTLD sequel that came out on basically the same day are surprisingly not bad.
Halloween score – 5
Quality score – 3
12:30 PM – 2:30 PM – Death Valley: The Revenge of Bloody Bill – This sounds like exactly the same movie as Wrestlemaniac, except with a dude from the Confederate Army rather than a luchador. Which is, of course, fine.
Halloween score – 3
Quality score – 3
2:30 PM – 9:00 PM – SyFy’s Best of Halloween: Saw IV, Dawn of the Dead, Resident Evil: Apocalypse – I can pretty much accept this since we’re in the home stretch and it’s not like they’re just showing exactly the same line-up again.
Halloween score – 4
Quality score – 4

9:00 PM – 11:00 PM – Zombie Apocalypse – Oooh – it’s a brand-new SyFy Original Movie, just for Halloween weekend! I don’t know any more about it than that. Watch it!
Halloween score – 5
Quality score – 3?
11:00 PM – 1:30 AM – Rob Zombie’s Halloween – I like it. Doesn’t mean you have to.

Halloween score – 5
Quality score – 3?
3:30 AM – 5:30 AM – Night of the Living Dead – I’m a little surprised they’re showing any version of this. Either standard one seems a little too classy. Maybe it’s that terrible version with the new footage. That shit was awful.

Halloween score – 4

1:00 PM – 3:30 AM – Just a bunch of movies SyFy has already shown – It’s fine – I just don’t want to bother with them anymore.
Halloween score – 1-5
Quality score – 2-4
Halloween!
3:30 AM – 5:30 AM – Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers – This one is the shit. It has all the crazy cult conspiracy stuff that never went anywhere. I like to pretend this and Chainsaw IV are related and there’s some big, secret government agency that breeds slashers.
Halloween score – 5
Quality score – 4
5:30 AM – 6:00 AM – Twilight Zone
Halloween score – 4
Quality score – 4
4:00 AM – 6:00 AM – Dracula 3000: Infinite Darkness – This one is about a young man from East Transylvania who – along with his best friend, Big Boi – escapes the dangerous slums and drug-dealing life of the ghetto to become one of the world’s foremost hip-hop artists. Or maybe not.

6:00 AM – 8:00 AM – Paid Programming

Until next time, stay creepy

  1. I've been seeing a lot of these Universal Monsters figures lately. They are definitely very popular among toy collectors. Love your pics for this series too BTW.

  2. Thanks, man! I've been enjoying using backgrounds instead of the plain old white surroundings. Someday I might even be able to upgrade my photography classification to "Amateur".
