A Preview of Heroes Convention 2011

We stopped by Heroes Convention last year on the way home from my parents’ home in Wilmington. It was astonishingly different from Dragon*Con. It is an actual comic book convention and that makes for a huge difference in the atmosphere. You can read about it here if you like.
I’ll be there Friday this year and am looking forward to an even better time thanks to the fact that we actually planned to do it this year. We’ll be arriving Thursday might and staying in a hotel, so if anybody has any partying suggestions let me know. I know Heroes Con isn’t the same as Dragon*Con, but somebody has to be partying, right?

So anyway, I just realized that I can make a post out of a Heroes Con preview, just like I do every year with Dragon*Con. I’m not running down the whole guest list because, frankly, I am not that big a comic book nerd and have no idea who a ton of these people are. But here’s the ones I do know, with my notes in yellow. This is all cut-and-pasted from the HeroesCon site, so the links to the creators’ pages should work if you want to check them out and those are their tables beside their names. I was just too lazy to take them all out.
NEAL ADAMS | AA-103
Batman: Odyssey, Green Lantern, Strange Adventures, X-Men – I never did get him to sign the first issue of the craziest comic ever – Batman: Odyssey. I need to make that happen.
JOHN ARCUDI | AA-509
BPRD, Abe Sapien, Wednesday Comics, New Avengers: Luke Cage, The Mask
MARK BROOKS | AA-301
Angelic, Dark Reign: Young Avengers, Ultimate X-Men, Avengers: The Initiative
J CHRIS CAMPBELL | AA-438
Creator of Neatobots, Zig Zag & Publisher of Wide Awake Press – I’m not actually familiar with this guy, I just think it’s hilarious that his name is so close to J. Scott Campbell’s. Wouldn’t you go by something else?
FRANK CHO | AA-502 & 503
Liberty Meadows, Jungle Girl, New Ultimates
JOHN TYLER CHRISTOPHER | AA-703
Artifacts, Witchblade, Twilight Guardian, Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four
DARWYN COOKE | AA-508
Parker: The Outfit, New Frontier, The Spirit – I still want a sketch from Mr. Cooke. For some reason I am hideously uncomfortable trying to get sketches from these people. I don’t know quite how to do it. Everybody I know has no issues with it, and my wife will go so far as to just demand them, which nobody ever seems to mind. She always expects me to get our annual Lil’ Troublemaker sketch from Brian Stelfreeze and I’m like, “He’s your friend. I don’t know the guy,” and she just doesn’t get why I’m uncomfortable. I guess it’s because this is what these folks do for a living and I feel like I’m putting them out or something. I dunno. My point is, I’m probably not getting any sketches at this thing, no matter how many people I write, “I want a sketch from this guy” beside.
GEOF DARROW | AA-719
Hard Boiled, Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, The Shaolin Cowboy
KELLY SUE DECONNICK | AA-110
Supergirl, Osborn, Yo Gabba Gabba!, CBGB
TODD DEZAGO | AA-403
Marvel Super Hero Squad, Perhapanauts, Tellos, Marvel Adventures Spider-Man
MICHAEL DOONEY | AA-807
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Gizmo – To me, Dooney is the only real TMNT artist whose name doesn’t rhyme with “Bleastman”. I’d love a sketch.
EVAN DORKIN | AA-516
Beasts of Burden, Milk & Cheese, Bill & Ted's Excellent Comic Book, Dork!
TOMMY LEE EDWARDS | AA-511
Turf, Marvel 1985, The Question, Star Wars, Wolverine
TOM FEISTER | AA-719
G.I. Joe: Origins, Ex Machina, The Darkness, Iron Man – An incredibly nice guy who has been more than accommodating on several occasions. I got one of my favorite pieces of convention art from him at Dragon*Con last year.
TOM FOWLER | AA-307
Mysterius the Unfathomable, Deadpool Team-Up, and MAD Magazine – Another super nice guy and one of my favorite Comic Twart contributors. Last year he made me understand the real difference between Dragon*Con, Wizard World and Heroes Con.
MATT FRACTION | AA-109
Thor, Invincible Iron Man, Casanova, Uncanny X-Men
FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA | AA-308
Black Panther: Man Without Fear, Detective Comics, Black Beetle, Zorro – My current favorite artist. I cannot get enough of his stuff and every single piece Francavilla contributes to Comic Twart is one of the best. That’s saying an awful lot considering the talent over there.
SL GALLANT | AA-728
GI Joe, Torchwood, Shrek, Monsters vs Aliens – Gallant is a key reason that I enjoy the GI Joe: RAH revival comic so much. His style isn’t dated at all, but works with the old-school feel of the comic. I’d love to have a sketch of Tunnel Rat and Phantom.
MICHAEL GOLDEN | AA-817
The Nam, Micronoauts, Dr. Strange, She-Hulk, Howard the Duck
CULLY HAMNER | AA-603
Red, The Question, Detective Comics, Black Lightning, Blue Beetle – A sketch of Renee Montoya as The Question would be cool.
SCOTT HAMPTON | AA-215
Hellboy: Sleeping and the Dead, Batman, Sandman
ADAM HUGHES | AA-701
Cover Run: The DC Comics Art of Adam Hughes, Wonder Woman, Catwoman – C’mon. Admit it. You like Hughes stuff, too. It’s exploitative as all get-out, but the guy is awesome.
DAVE JOHNSON | AA-620
Punisher, 100 Bullets, Superman Red Son, Drink and Draw Social Club
JEFF JOHNSON | AA-622
Wonderman, Spider-man, Green Lantern, Drink and Draw Social Club
JOE JUSKO | AA-624
Vampirella, Wolverine/Hercules
RICK LEONARDI | AA-710
Aliens vs Predator, Vigilante, Superman, JLA, Nightwing, Batgirl
TONY MOORE | AA-703-704
Venom, The Walking Dead, Fear Agent, The Exterminators, Punisher
SEAN MURPHY| AA-633
Joe the Barbarian, Hellblazer, Off Road
STEVE NILES | AA-206
Mystery Society, The X-Files/30 Days of Night, The Ghoul, Sacred Hearts – I’ve met Niles before and he is so nice I think you could just dip his finger in your coffee to sweeten it up. I just want to tell him how much Edge of Fear blew my mind. I might also harass him into giving me Kelley Jones’ contact info. I must have that sketch!
MIKE NORTON | AA-211
Young Justice, Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt, Battlepug – Oddly, this is the one where I’m going to nut up enough to get the sketch I want. I love pugs and Robin is Lil’ Troublemaker’s favorite hero, so a Robin/Battlepug meeting is going to have to happen.
PHIL NOTO | AA-616
Avengers: The Origin, Superman/Supergirl: Maelstrom, Jonah Hex, Birds of Prey
KEVIN NOWLAN | AA-504
Grimwood's Daughter, Wednesday Comics, Batman: Hidden Treasures
JEFF PARKER | AA-306
Hulk, Thunderbolts, Bucko
JOE PEKAR | AA-808
Grimm Fairy Tales, Brandi Bare, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
JASON PEARSON | AA-718
Body Bags, Astonishing X-Men, Deadpool: Wade Wilson's War
DON ROSA | THE COMIC STRIP
The Life and Times of Uncle Scrooge, Walt Disney's Comics and Stories
ANDY RUNTON | AA-444
Owly
RON SALAS | AA-309
Existence 2.0/3.0, Dracula: Company of Monsters, Comic Twart – I’m going to try and get something from every Comic Twarter in attendance. I love the site and want to support all of those guys.
TIM SALE | AA-619
Daredevil: Yellow, Batman: The Long Halloween, Spiderman: Blue
DECLAN SHALVEY | AA-413
Thunderbolts, 28 Days Later, Captain America and Crossbones – Another Twarter and probably my second favorite on the site after Francavilla.
ANDY SMITH | AA-813
WWE Heroes, Dean Koontz's Nevermore, Superman Confidential – We’ll see how chatty this guy is. If I can get a sketch from a guy who worked on the monumental WWE Heroes then I think I’m going to be pretty happy. As long as he didn’t read my review.
RYAN SOOK | AA-510
BPRD: Hollow Earth, Seven Soldiers: Zatanna, Wednesday Comics: Kamandi
BRIAN STELFREEZE | AA-601
Jonah Hex, Wednesday Comics, The Ride, Gun Candy – Mrs. Troublemaker is friends with Brian. He does a sketch of our son in different superhero costumes every year at Dragon*Con and won’t charge her for them. She always tries to make me ask for them. This makes me uncomfortable because I have no good justification for getting free sketches from Brian Fucking Stelfreeze. Seriously – I bought extra copies of Shadow of the Bat just to hang the covers up on my walls back in the day. I LOVE that guy’s work and cannot wrap my head around the fact that he is technically an acquaintance. Stop making me harass him.
MARK TEXEIRA | AA-819
Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Sabretooth, Jonah Hex
ART THIBERT | AA-316
Ultimate Spider-Man, X-Factor, X-Men
DEAN TRIPPE | AA-521
Power Lunch, Ghost Projekt, Comic Book Tattoo, Butterfly, Project: Rooftop
KOI TURNBULL | AA-235
Spider-Man: One Month To Live, Fathom, New Warriors, Detective Comics
ETHAN VAN SCIVER | AA-802
Green Lantern, Cyberfrogs, New X-Men
DEXTER VINES | AA-117
Ultimate Thor, Ultimate Avengers, Old Man Logan, Civil War, Superman/Batman
CHRIS WALKER | AA-234
Tiger Style – Funny story – I know this guy from when I worked at GameStop. I wouldn’t ever hook him up because I never hooked anybody up. He was still always cool, which was a vast difference from other people. Now he runs a studio. Crazy. I’m hoping to run into him Thursday night.
DAVID WILLIAMS | AA-310
X-Men: First Class, GI Joe, Incredible Hercules, Hulk & Power Pack
BERNIE WRIGHTSON | AA-207
Dead She Said, The Ghoul, Swamp Thing, Frankenstein, Batman: The Cult
JOHN WYCOUGH | AA-322
G.I. Joe, Transformers, Dr. Who, Star Wars, Noble Causes
KELLY YATES | AA-321
Amber Atoms, Doctor Who, Tales of Tellos, JLA/JSA Secret File – This is my number two priority behind Mike Norton. Yates is penciling the current Doctor Who mini and I have GOT TO HAVE a sketch of Phantom Troublemaker with the Doctor. Maybe Amy and Rory, too. We’ll see. Yeah, I know anybody can draw Doctor Who, but this is the guy that’s getting paid to do it right now. That’s special.
SKOTTIE YOUNG | AA-209
Ozma of Oz, Junk One, Iron Man & The Armor Wars, Wonderful Wizard of Oz – I just love Skottie Young’s work.
CHRISSIE ZULLO | AA-232
Cinderella: From Fabletown With Love, Madame Xanadu, Fables

I can’t imagine I’m really going to have a whole lot of time for panels, what with the family being there and only having one day, but if I can I definitely want to make the Comic Twart panel at 1:00. It features all of the attending Twartists and is being hosted by ComicsAlliance.com’s resident funnyman Chris Sims, who would probably not like knowing that he had been referred to that way. That’s okay. I’m sure none of my five regular readers would ever tell him.

Until next time, stay creepy
-Phantom
