Toy Review – Green Lantern Classics Manhunter By Mattel

Despite the surprising creepiness of Black Lantern Abin Sur, the amazing menace of Mongul and the sheer awesomeness of Black Hand; the Manhunter might be the true dark horse winner of Green Lantern Classics Series 1.

The Manhunter robot was the only figure in the series that I dismissed right off the bat and never thought about again until I had to preorder him from Amazon just to get Arkillo’s left nipple or whatever. Once I saw him in Toys R Us he looked a little cooler, but still not anything I was stoked to be having to buy. Let’s see what turned me around on this guy…
First Glance: The first thing that started to win me over was its big, square Green Lantern. It is also quickly apparent that it’s not just a different head and paint job on a generic DCUC body, which is what I thought this figure was going to be.
Sculpt: The Manhunter is more than it appears to be at first. It obviously has a new head; but also sports new forearms, new hands, new calves, new feet and a neck thing. This all combines to make the Manhunter strikingly different from most other DCUC releases. He has fancy, new double-jointed knees as well.
Design:The colors on Manhunter are so simple, and yet very striking. He really only consists of three colors - red, metallic blue and silver - but they just look so good. The crispness and accuracy of the paint apps help, too. No bleeding here. You also have the white of its teeth and the green details on its gauntlets and boots that just make the thing pop.
Accessories: Holy crap! We got an accessory with this one! Two if you count the 3D glasses! And I don't! Seriously, though. His big, square V 1.0 Green Lantern is just awesome.
Packaging: I like the GLC packaging quite a bit. Not only is it a nice break from the yellow DCUC look, The blisters themselves have a new and interesting shape. Not to mention the holes punched in the side that allow you a nice pre-purchase whiff of that sweet, sweet New Toy Smell.
Overall: I don't want to seem overly exuberant about what is essentially a generic robot, but this really is a great figure. To make me dig a figure of a character that I really don't give a shit about is a pretty big accomplishment. I want a few more of these. Too bad they're so fucking pricey. Ten bucks apiece and I'd buy three more, easy (four is the number of troop builders I generally like to have as a bare minimum for some reason).
5 out of 5
Maybe they'll do a five-pack on Matty or something. Battle-damaged Manhunters, anybody? Yeah - I generally hate battle damage, but if its an extra I'm okay with it.
Until next time, stay creepy

  1. Those knee joints look like they should become the new standard in their line. Yay, articulation! :D

  2. No doubt. They did a great job with those.
